Happy Planting
A few questions which will help you decide whether to Plant out or Pot-on
Even though our plants are raised without heat, they will not enjoy being planted straight into frozen ground, if temperatures are still consistently low in early Spring then please pot your plants on until the soil is not freezing to the touch.
If you have received HHA ( Half Hardy Annuals). These plants are not frost-hardy Please consider when your last frost date is, this varies throughout the country. If you suspect you may be expecting a frost then be cautious and pot your plants on and keep them protected until the risk has passed.
Before you plant your plug plants into the ground consider your current and future soil conditions.
If you have received plants in Autumn,
How is your soil over winter does it hold water? do you get extreme frosts or high winds where the plants are to be growing over winter? If so the best advice would be to pot them on and grow in greenhouse or sheltered position over winter.
If you have received plants in Spring/Summer?
Is your soil very dry if so we recommend pre watering the planting hole as well as watering after planting, then giving your plants extra attention for water requirements whilst they establish thier roots.
To ensure your plants will grow happily in thier surroundings, you must ensure your planting area is prepared.
Preparation includes finding an appropriate space for the plants to grow with enough distance from established plants and trees which may overshadow your plug plants. Soil in the planting area is not compacted and if required enrichment to poor soils has been provided.
If your planting space is not prepared and you need time to do so we recommend potting your plug plants on whilst you do so.
All of our plants have the name and classification of the plant on the label.
HA -Is a Hardy Annual -These plants are hardy to the frost. They will produce flowers in their first season of growth and not return (unless they have self-sown). These plants should be fine to plant straight out if conditions allow.
HHA- Is a Half Hardy Annual- These plants flower in their first season go to seeds then die. These plants do not like frost and may die if are exposed to frost. If there is a risk of frost please pot on and protect these plants.
Biennial- These plants will flower the summer after they are planted. They are frost hardy and like to develop stong roots over winter so Plant straight out if you can.
Perennial- some if these plants may flower in thier first season others may take another year. Perennials will grow every year. When you first receive these plants we would recommend growing them on in a 1ltr pot to ensure strong roots before they are planted out in open ground.
If you choose to plant your plug Plants outside.
